The software that runs your nursery will still be running it in ten years. That is exactly the wrong place to chase the newest, cleverest tool. Proven, unfashionable and well understood is the feature.

Every technology choice spends a little of your luck. The trick to a system that lasts is to spend it where it makes you different — and to be reassuringly dull everywhere else.

There is a permanent temptation in software to reach for the newest thing — the framework everyone is talking about this year, the database that promises to change everything, the architecture from a conference talk. It feels like progress. For a business system that has to run for a decade, it is usually a liability.

"Boring" technology means something precise: tools with a long track record, well-understood failure modes, and a large crowd who have already hit every pothole and written down where they are. A relational database that has been keeping the world's records straight since the 1970s. Server-rendered pages, the original and unglamorous way the web works. A single, coherent application written in a mainstream language you can actually hire for. None of it will trend on social media. All of it will still be here, and still supported, when this year's exciting option has been abandoned by its makers.

This is not nostalgia. A nursery buying software is buying decades of operation: invoices, passports and stock history that must still open and still add up long after the purchase. The boring choice is simply the one most likely to keep that promise.
